Six days ago, my male Basset Hound, Otis, decided that it was time for him to establish his dominance over the other two canines in the house. He probably would have challenged me next, he was feeling so full of himself, but that notion was nipped in the bud when he made his initial challenge to Butch, an 11 year old Rottweiler, who has frankly seen it all, heard it all, and is just too old and tired to care about it, anymore. Butch does not have a vicious bone in his body, but that body does still have about 70 pounds on Otis. So, when the young lad exerted his dominance, he was summarily put in his place, and not even that forcefully, but remember that 70 pounds I mentioned a second ago? The final result was: Butch 1, Otis 0, with a trip to the vet to clean up the, not so gentle reminder on Otis' neck, that Butch is NOT to be trifled with. Having seen it, I was simply reminded of the fact that dog's live by a very simple and straight forward set of rules. If you fuss with the big dog, you get bitten. And here I was, thinking that maybe Butch is getting too old to take care of himself, anymore. I got an education, too.
